Indian textile exporters urged the U.S. Department of Labor to abolish non-tariff barriers, and they pledged that the Indian apparel export industry did not employ child labor.

The U.S. government imposes restrictions on Indian garment exporters. They also threatened to increase non-tariff barriers. Last week, a delegation of representatives from the Northern Textile Research Association and the Tirup Exporters Association held talks with the U.S. Department of Labor to demand the removal of these trade barriers. Amarendra Sahoo, Secretary-General of the Indian Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC), said that the garment export industry in India has and basically eradicated child labor.

AEPC plans to eradicate child labor, and DISHA (the human capital drive to achieve sustainable development in the industry) has helped apparel manufacturers comply with global society standards and norms.

This plan has the support of the Ministry of Textiles and has passed the ILO's review. This plan will assess the practices of exporting companies, identify gaps, provide guidance, and fill gaps. Annual assessments, assessments and certifications are also part of the plan.

DISHA will help export trademarks out of their supply chain diagrams and corrective action will be taken if necessary. This plan will help companies focus on internal systems and put internal procedures and processes in place.

Now, AEPC is registering exporters as part of DISHA.
